Structure

The structural parts, such as the base, table, columns and cross rail are all manufactured from high quality Meehanite cast iron, fully stress relieved before surface hardening and precision machining takes place.
Slideways, Saddles and Drive Mechanism

The slideways of the column beam and saddle are all hardened by high frequency induction before they are precision ground. The column had twin vertical slideways on either side for further enhanced rigidity during heavy duty machining.
The two cross rail saddles and the ram saddle are lined with Turcite B for smooth movement and wear resistance.
Both axes are positioned by means of AC digital servo motors mounted directly to the end of large diameter pre-tensioned ballscrews. Standard feedback comes from pulse coders mounted inside the servo motors, but the machine can be supplied with linear scales for even greater accuracy.
Cross Beam

The slideways on the cross beam are enhanced with alloy steel to further increase their wear resistance. The unclamping and elevation of the cross beam is achieved hydraulically, whereas the clamping is done by mechanical springs and shotbolt when the limit switches on either side are touched.
Lubrication
All slideways and ballscrews are lubricated by means of an automatic oil distributor, controlled by variable timer settings inside the Fanuc control. The spindle bearings and gear box are lubricated by circulating refrigerated oil.
Built-In Two Stage Gear Box

High torque or high speed is achieved by means of a very robust built-in two stage gear box.
Ram Functions
The standard turning machine is fitted with a very strong and powerful 'T' puller in the centre of the ram to clamp the turning tool holders on to the ram nose. The clamping force is provided by a large column of disc springs to hold the tools even when the machine has been shut down, and unclamping is performed hydraulically. Accurate location of the tool holders is guaranteed by means of the curvic coupling on the ram nose and tool holders.
Automatic Tool Changer and Magazine

The tool selection is bi-directional for greatest efficiency and driven by AC servo motor for fast and accurate positioning and repeatability. Tool are exchanged by means of magazine indexing, axis positioning and a hydraulic clamping mechanism within the ram. The tool magazine has a separate guard with automatic door to prevent swarf and coolant entering this compartment during machining.
Machine Enclosure
The working environment is fully enclosed except for the roof, and two large doors provide the operator with a very generous loading aperture. All doors are interlocked for complete operator safety.
Standard Control and Drive System
The machine is enhanced with renowned Fanuc control and digital drive systems. All functions are accessible at an ergonomically designed operators panel complete with an 8.4 inch colour liquid crystal display. A mobile handwheel ( manual pulse generator ), for easy setup inside the machine, is also standard equipment.
